When switching on your computer for the first time, Windows will go through it's "First time setup wizard", and this will usually involve inputting your Product Key. Your Product Key can be found in either of the following locations -
- On the Window license sticker located on your machine somewhere.
- On the Product Key sheet provided with your machine
- Underneath or located underneath the system battery compartment (laptops only).
It is worth noting with Windows 7 that if you type your Product Key incorrectly here it will not inform you of this discrepancy, and carry on with the wizard as normal. This can lead to confusion as after 30 days Windows will state it is not genuine (even though you believe you have entered a valid Key).
To rectify this issue please follow these steps -
Click Start > Right Click "Computer" and select "Properties" > Scroll down and click "Activate Windows now".
It will ask you to input your Product Key again seeing as the first time it was incorrect. Read all characters carefully and be sure not to mix up things like "8" and "B". You must be connected to the internet for this as it will also "Activate Windows" at the same time online.
